Chemotherapy Hair Loss & Regrowth: Nicky’s Journey From Wig to Hair Topper
Chemotherapy-related hair loss can be an emotional and unexpected part of cancer treatment. While some people lose most or all of their hair, others experience thinning in specific areas, with regrowth bringing further changes along the way.
At our North East Hair Loss Clinic, we understand that every hair loss journey is different. Through our specialist wig and hair loss services, we support clients as they navigate these changes and find solutions that suit their individual needs.
Nicky kindly agreed to share her experience, from significant hair loss during chemotherapy to the return of her natural curls and her transition from a wig to a lightweight hair topper.
Nicky’s Chemotherapy Hair Loss Journey
Nicky prepared herself for the possibility of losing all her hair during chemotherapy. However, her experience took a different turn.
She experienced significant hair loss across her crown while retaining much of her natural hair around the hairline, sides and back. Rather than losing all her hair, the changes were concentrated in particular areas. During this time, Nicky chose a wig to provide coverage while she navigated treatment and the changes to her appearance.
Following treatment, she began to notice new growth across her crown. Her natural hair started returning with a beautiful, thick, curly texture, marking another important stage in her journey.
Nicky's experience highlights an important point: chemotherapy doesn't always cause complete hair loss. The extent and pattern of hair loss can vary from person to person, just as the timing and appearance of regrowth can differ.
Finding The Right Solution as Hair Grows Back
As Nicky's natural hair began to return, her needs changed too. Rather than continuing with a full wig, we explored an option that would work with her regrowth while providing coverage where she needed it most. Together, we chose a flat, clip-in hair topper to help cover the thinning across her crown.
Unlike a wig, which provides full coverage, a topper is designed to add hair to specific areas. It can blend with existing hair to create a natural-looking result without covering the entire scalp.
For Nicky, this offers several benefits:
Lightweight comfort: Less coverage than a full wig can feel lighter and cooler to wear.
Targeted coverage: The topper provides additional fullness across her crown while allowing her natural curls to remain part of her look.
Easy removal: The clip-in design means the topper can be taken off when needed, provided there is sufficient suitable hair to secure it.
A personalised finish: The aim is to complement her existing hair and regrowth for a look that feels natural to her.
Choosing the right topper involves considering the amount and condition of the existing hair, the area requiring coverage, and the style and comfort preferences of the individual. A professional consultation helps establish which option is most suitable.
As Nicky's story shows, a hair loss solution doesn't have to stay the same forever. What works at one stage may be different from what you need later.

Every Hair Loss Journey Is Different
Hair loss is personal, and finding the right solution involves more than choosing a hairpiece. Comfort, appearance and individual needs all matter. At Steven Scarr Hairdressing, we provide a private, supportive environment where clients can explore their options and receive expert guidance on fitting, styling and ongoing maintenance.
Nicky’s journey shows how the right solution can change over time. Her wig provided the coverage she needed during treatment, while a lightweight, flat topper is now a better fit as her natural hair grows back.
